Scarf Twist DIY

How many times have you looked through the beautiful pages of the J.Crew catalog and wondered how they style every page so effortlessly? I know I wonder that every time I look at it and I'm a fashion stylist. haha. photo (11)

One of the styling details that stood out in the latest J.Crew catalog was the way they tied their scarves. Scarves are a beautiful and functional accessory  to wear as we approach the cooler months. I put together a simple little DIY on how you can get the twisted scarf look. If you're tired of simply wrapping the scarf around your neck or always having to rely on infinity scarves to look good try this trick.

1. Pick a scarf that is pretty long. I used a light-weight cotton scarf, but a thick wool scarf or even a silk scarf would be great with this technique.

2. Tie the scarf to a handle. In this case I just used a door knob.

photo (4)3. Twist the entire scarf tightly until you can't twist it anymore.

photo (7)4. Take the end off the door holding tightly to each end to make sure it doesn't unravel. Bring the two ends together and you'll notice the scarf wrap around itself until it looks like below. (Don't let go).

photo (6)5. Hold the ends tightly so it doesn't unravel, and wrap it around your neck. Put one of the ends through the loop at the other end of the scarf and secure by tying a knot.

photo (9)Voila! You can keep the knot in the front or place it in the back. I think scarves are a great way to dress up a casual t-shirt like I am wearing.

Wrapped Up

On a recent photo shoot I played around with a scarf and end up wrapping it around the model's head almost in an African way. It turned out beautifully. There was something about showcasing pretty fabric close the face instead of having  hair be the main attraction.

If you have a pretty silk scarf, something with a unique pattern or even plain white, try wrapping it around your head this summer. Give your hair a break, and change it up. Check out some of the different ways you can show your silk off!

2010 Summer & Winter Scarves

A couple years ago scarves turned into more than a winter accessory. They are now a way to accessorize year round and, especially, add pizazz to plain Jane clothes.

I was reminded of this neglected accessory when I saw fashion artist Dallas Shaw talk about them on her blog as well as FabSugar this morning.

Feeling suddenly inspired by these photos, I thought I would share them with you as well.

These gorgeous tie-dyed scarves are by Scout and Catalogue. I really like the way this scarf is tied. It's very unique looking, and would make her stand out in a crowd.

Payal Luthra's 2010 Fall collection looks beautiful, and is styled EXACTLY how I would wear it. Simple, clean and elegant.

This scarf is a great example of how you can incorporate scarves during the heat of the summer.

This would be a great transition into fall - a plain white t with a warm cashmere scarf.

Paired with liquid leggings, this is a great outfit for a concert.

Scarves can be worn to work too. This is fashion forward and office appropriate at the same time.

Since nudes go with everything, where bright accessories, especially near your face so the most important feature doesn't get washed away. Scarves and jeweled necklaces do the trick. A bright, big satchel across or along your body will also make you stand out in the crowd.
